Charles F. "Charley" Linberg, loving husband, devoted father and loyal friend, passed away peacefully on August 26, 2017 at Stonegates Retirement Community at the age of 89 surrounded by loved ones.Born in Passaic, NJ, his family moved to Carney's Point NJ when he was 2. Charley met his future wife Kate, the love of his life, at age 15 while a lifeguard at Riverview Beach Amusement Park. He dropped out of Penns Grove Regional High School on his 17th birthday to enter the Navy and "win the war." Two years later, he returned to finish high school and then received a degree in Textile Fibers Engineering at Lowell Technical Institute in Massachusetts. Charley had a long career in textile fibers with the DuPont Company, a career of which he was truly proud and where he made many friends with whom he continued to socialize at monthly lunches and holiday parties long after his retirement. In 2002, he was among a group of 12 employees who won the honor of contributing to the 200th DuPont Company Anniversary Time Capsule. Charley was very involved with the St. Elizabeth Catholic Church and surrounding community where he established lifelong friendships. First Fridays at Mulrooney's Tavern became a tradition for Charley, Kate and their neighbors. He was a die-hard UD football fan and traveled with Kate to home and away games up and down the coast. Charley especially enjoyed summers in Rehoboth and traveling with Kate. But his happiest moments were when surrounded by his family. Charley was an avid golfer and member of the DuPont and Rehoboth Beach Country Clubs. After retiring from DuPont, Charley was instrumental in the establishment of the golf course ratings system for the Delaware State Golf Association. He served as the Course Rating Director for 15 years. He was awarded the DSGA President's Award in 1995 for "his outstanding contribution to the DSGA." In 2003, he also received their annual award for promotion of the game of golf. He took several trips to Scotland and Ireland to golf with his friends and he also took time to tutor adults to read through a public library program. He was a proud lifetime member of the VFW.Charley was predeceased by his wife, Kathleen Burleigh Linberg; a brother, Eugene Linberg; and his parents, Catherine Gavin and Henry G Linberg. He is survived by 5 children, Steven E Linberg and his wife Alice of Laytonsville MD; Kathleen "Honey" Fisher and her husband Mike of Wilmington DE; Anne Delhommeau and her husband Gilles of Washington DC; Charles H Linberg and his wife Sharon of Omaha NE; and James R Linberg and his wife Kelli of Middlefield OH. Charley was also blessed with 10 grandchildren: Conor, David, Alison, Erin, Andrew, Drew, Steven, Andrea, Shannon and Kasey; 1 step-granddaughter, Lucille; and 10 great-grandchildren: Kate, Ella, Gavin, Aidan, Melina, Mia, Harper, Victoria, Alice and Isabella. A memorial service will be held at 11am on Saturday, September 9 at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, Cedar and Clayton Streets, Wilmington, DE with visitation prior to the service at 10am. Burial will be private.
