Charles William
Bashew
May 27, 1965 – June 22, 2023
Charles William Bashew, 58, of Northampton, MA, formerly of Mount Laurel and Metuchen, NJ, and Abington, PA, passed away on June 22, 2023.
Charles was born in New Brunswick, NJ, beloved son of Charles William Bashew and the late Joyce Ann (Mozgai) Bashew. He graduated from Metuchen High School where he played varsity football. He served in the US Navy as AT Petty Officer 3rd Class on the supercarriers USS Nimitz and USS Kitty Hawk and was stationed at Naval Air Station VQ2 in Rota, Spain, having received several meritorious ribbons and commendations. Charles worked for Verizon Communications in corporate customer service.
Charles had a quick wit and a sharp sense of humor. Always the storyteller, he lived by the motto, "Never let the truth spoil a good story." He possessed a great knowledge of trivia on a wide variety of subjects, and he enjoyed watching Jeopardy. He loved baseball and he followed the Philadelphia Phillies. Music was a big part of his life, and as a lifelong student of the guitar, he was a dedicated fan of blues guitarists Eric Clapton and George Thorogood. Most of all, he valued and loved his friends and family, to whom he was known by many different names: Bill, Billy, Bashew, Shoe, Charlie, Cholly, and Chuck. But in his most cherished roles in life, he was known as Dad and Uncle Bill.
Charles was preceded in death by his mother, Joyce, who passed away last year. Charles is survived by his children, Edward William Bashew and Colleen LaVerne Bashew; his father, Charles "Bill" Bashew; his sisters, Lynn Bashew and Joyce Rosenberg (Milton); his godmother, Laverne "Cookie" Simonelli, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and close friends.
Funeral services will be held privately at the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Wrightstown, NJ, on July 7. In lieu of flowers, please kindly consider a donation in Charles' name to Quilts of Valor (Helping Hands of Delaware QOV-52476, P.O. Box 191, Winterset, IA 50273), an organization that helps to cover veterans with comfort and healing, taking them from despair to hope.
