Charles "Chuck" Attix III
November 18, 1947 – October 21, 2026
If you ever met Chuck Attix, chances are he remembered you. He never forgot a name or a face. And chances are you remembered him too.
Chuck died on October 21 at home, surrounded by the people he loved most. He was 78. He fought cancer bravely for nearly 10 years, and he did it the way he did everything else, with a joke ready and a real interest in whoever walked into his room. The nurses at Penn, Fox Chase and hospice all loved him. He learned their names, asked about their lives and made them laugh. He stayed that way until the very end, full of warmth and humor.
Chuck grew up in Wilmington and graduated from P.S. duPont High School in 1965. He married his childhood sweetheart, Linda Campbell, on June 22, 1968, and never stopped being that kid who couldn't believe his luck. He always wanted to be by her side, and he made her feel loved and beautiful every day. After serving in the National Guard, he spent 18 years with Gulf Oil, rising from order clerk to Terminal Manager. He later worked as a cabinetmaker at Atlantic Aviation. Chuck finished his career in auto sales and management, mostly at Porter Chevrolet in Newark. Upon retirement he kept busy driving cars for dealer friends and getting back to pool, a game he played his whole life; his pool buddies will tell you that he was quite good.
Going anywhere with Chuck was an adventure. You could not get from the door to the table without him running into someone he knew. He had friends from every walk of life, and he treated everyone like they mattered. He had a rare gift for making people feel special. He was never jealous of anyone. When good things happened to the people around him, he was genuinely happy for them. He would also tell you the truth, every time, even when you didn't want to hear it. Somehow, he could say the thing nobody else would dare to, and you'd walk away feeling better, not worse.
He made his son feel smart, confident and capable of anything. His son's friends envied him for having a dad who was so proud and so present. Chuck was fiercely protective of his family, quick to cry, quick to hug, and never afraid to tell you he loved you.
When his granddaughter Brooke came along, he threw himself into being a grandfather. He drove her to and from elementary and middle school and insisted on being first in line at pickup, even if it meant showing up hours early. He wanted her to walk out those doors and see him right there waiting. She always did.
Chuck was happiest outdoors. He loved nature and anything living in it, and he had a soft spot for every animal he met, dogs most of all. He was an avid Phillies and Eagles fan, though his patience ran thin when they made it hard. He loved diners and sweets, and he was on a lifelong search for really good Italian bread. When the food was good, you heard about it. Out loud, with every bite. He loved a good action movie, but he always wanted to know the ending before he watched, just to make sure the good guy won. He cared deeply about this country and wanted to see democracy protected. He was not shy about saying so.
More than anything, he loved his family. Time together was what he wanted most, and it's what we'll miss most.
Chuck is survived by his wife of 58 years, Linda; his son, Chuck Attix IV (Carolanne); his granddaughter, Brooke; his brothers, Chris (Patricia) and Michael; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Gloria (Pellegrino) Kane and Charles Attix Jr.
We are heartbroken. The world will be a little quieter and a lot less fun without him. But every one of us is better for having been loved by him.
The family welcomes all who knew and loved Chuck to join them in honoring his life, sharing memories, and celebrating the joy and love he brought to so many. A visitation will be held on Thursday, October 29, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Mealey Funeral Home, 2509 Limestone Road, Wilmington, DE 19808 with brief Words of Remembrance to follow.
Interment will be private.
