Our beloved Bert Nicholls, of Newark, DE was called home on October 25, 2020 at Bayhealth Kent General Hospital. Originally from St. Thomas, Barbados, Bert was one of four siblings born to the late Doreen and Cuthbert Nicholls. He immigrated to Brooklyn, New York in 1960. Bert graduated from Wingate High School and later enlisted in the US Military where he served for 6 years. Bert attended City College of New York, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. He went on to work in law enforcement in many different capacities, starting as a police officer and rising to an inspector for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Bert had many hobbies which included traveling around the United States and the Caribbean, reading, creative writing, playing dominos and spades, soccer, swimming, researching history and was a film enthusiast and avid photographer. Bert was a jack of all trades and a great handy man. He liked fixing things for his friends and family, helping any one out when they were in need. He will be remembered for his friendly, cheerful and giving personality... but most of all, for being a very devoted father and grandfather. Bert is survived by his children, Christopher and Elizabeth Nicholls; his grandchildren, India and Cash; sister, Coleen Smart; brother, Gascoigne Nicholls and his wife, Margaret; his nieces and nephews, Melanie, Matthew, Laura, Christina, Andrea; and his extended family, Marcia, Earline, the Fosters, Hamblins, Nicholls, Hercules, Browns, and Welch's.
