Obituary

Anna Margaret "Nancy" Hayden, age 83, of Wilmington, Delaware, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 7, 2025.

Born and raised in Wilmington, Nancy was the beloved daughter of the late Eleanor (Limberg) and Abram Hayden Jr. She graduated from Conrad High School before earning her degree from Troy State University, pursuing her lifelong passion for literature and education.

Nancy dedicated 39 years of her life to teaching English at Thomas McKean High School. She was not just an educator, but a true mentor and advocate for her students. Under her guidance, the school newspaper The Minstrel earned numerous state and national awards. She had a gift for recognizing potential in every student and worked tirelessly to ensure they had the support they needed—whether that meant applying to college, exploring vocational paths, or simply finding their voice. Nancy's love of the written word (and correct grammar!) was reflected in her love of reading, listening to audiobooks, and humorously sharing her grammar knowledge with students and friends.

Beyond the classroom, Nancy was deeply connected to the natural world. A lifelong member of both the Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge and Tri-State Bird Rescue, she found great joy in birdwatching, traveling, and the quiet beauty of nature. She was also an active and devoted member of First and Central Presbyterian Church, where she found spiritual nourishment and a warm community of friends.

Nancy was a passionate supporter of many environmental and animal welfare organizations. Her generosity helped fund initiatives to protect wildlife habitats, improve the treatment of domestic animals, and preserve the health of our oceans and the Chesapeake Bay. Her quiet philanthropy reflected a deep sense of stewardship for the world around her; and her love of the natural world was reflected in the beautiful photographs in her home.

She cherished time spent with loved ones—gathering with friends at church, traveling the United States and supporting local artisans with her beloved friend Joan Loveless, or enjoying rowdy Christmas celebrations with her extended "family." Nancy had a sharp wit, a warm heart, and a fierce devotion to the people and causes she loved.

Nancy is survived by her brother, Abram Hayden III; several nieces and nephews; and close family friends and caregivers Helen and Ernie Lareau, who held a special place in her heart.

A memorial service to celebrate Nancy's life will be held at First and Central Presbyterian Church, 1101 N Market St, Wilmington, DE, on April 15, 2025 at 10am.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Nancy's memory be made to Tri-State Bird Rescue, 170 Possum Hollow Rd, Newark, DE 19711 (tristatebird.org), or Friendship House, PO Box 1517, Wilmington, DE 19899 (friendshiphousede.org)—both organizations dear to her heart.

She will be remembered always for her wisdom, compassion, and unwavering belief in the good of others.
