Alfred Theodore "Ted" Hawkinson "Hawk" Jr., age 82, of Middletown, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday, January 8, 2024.
Ted was born in Philadelphia, PA, son of the late Elizabeth (Galloway) and Alfred Theodore Hawkinson Sr. Ted attended both the Devoe School for boys and Conrad high school before graduating from the International School of Geneva in Switzerland. Ted then attended the University of Delaware and served our nation honorably in the U.S Air Force, being a member of the 306 Bomber Wing (SAC) and the 631 Combat Support Group with deployment in both Vietnam and Thailand, eventually receiving the Air Force Commendation Medal. After returning home from the service, Ted joined the Delaware State Police, a job he truly loved, where he was a member of Troop 1, Troop 2A (later known as Troop 6), Troop 8, the K-9 Corps with his dog, AJ, the Special Investigations Unit, the Attorney Generals White Collar Crimes Task Force, and eventually working undercover in the Vice and Auto Theft Units as Officer in Charge before retiring with the rank of Lieutenant. After retirement from the Delaware State Police, Ted joined the staff at the Winterthur Museum and Gardens as the Director of Public Safety for 16 years. Ted was also a member of the Masonic Lodge #26, VFW Post 475, American Legion Post 25, Vietnam Veterans of America, the Association of Delaware Retired State Police, and the NRA. In his free time, Ted loved spending time with his friends and family, and cheering on his beloved Philadelphia Phillies.
Ted is survived by his loving wife of 22 years, Catherine "Cathy" Hawkinson (nee DiSanto); sons and their wives, Mark (Candice) Hawkinson and Adam (Stefanie) Hawkinson; daughter and her husband, Heather (Troy) Howaniec; step son and his wife, Robert (Tammy) Johnson; step daughters and their husbands, Victoria (Ryan) Johnson and Kathleen (Andrew) Frey; grandchildren, Aiden Hawkinson, Alexander Hawkinson, Erik Hawkinson, James Hawkinson, Ella Howaniec, Dylan Howaniec, Owen Johnson, Logan Johnson, Penn Johnson, Liv Johnson, Julia Frey, and Wade Frey; sister, Judith Lynch; and numerous nieces, nephews, and close family friends whom he all loved.
A visitation for Ted will be held on Wednesday, January 17, 2024, at the Mealey Funeral Home, 2509 Limestone Rd, Wilmington, DE 19808, where friends and family may call from 10:30 to 11:30am, with a memorial service following at 11:30am. Burial will follow at All Saints Cemetery.
