Walter P. Allen, Jr. "Sonny", 80 of New Castle passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on October 5, 2017 at Heartland Hospice House.Sonny was born in Wilmington and grew up in "The Flats", the son of the late Helen R. (Gilmore) and Walter P. Allen, Sr. He was a 1954 graduate of Wilmington High School and served in the Delaware Air National Guard. Walt retired in 1993 as an insurance agent with Prudential Insurance after more than 30 years. He served as an usher for the University of Delaware football games for over 25 years and the Wilmington Blue Rocks for 20 years. He was also a season ticket holder for the University of Delaware basketball program.Sonny was a member of the Our Lady of Fatima Leisure Group and he coached CYO basketball for the church and baseball for Suburban Little League. He was an avid bowler and once rolled a perfect 300 game. He was an active member of the Stahl Post traveling Tailgaters Club. As a Grandad he was extremely proud of his grandson's and was their #1 fan especially at their football games at St. Mary's and Salesianum. Walt was predeceased by his sisters, Lillian Ellicott and Doris Dougherty and his brother, Robert Allen.Sonny will be dearly missed by his loving wife of 60 years Geraldine (Rucinski) Allen; his son, Kevin S. Allen of Townsend; his daughter, Kim S. Allen of New Castle; his grandsons, Damian (fiance, Lauren), Brandon and Zachary; his nieces and nephews Michele and Jacki, Lynn, Nancy, Beverly, Steve, and Bobby, his favorite sister-in-law, Elaine Kryspin of Lewes and his faithful companion and dog Bailey.A vistation will be held on Monday evening, from 5PM to 7PM, with a funeral service beginning at 7PM at the MEALEY FUNERAL HOME, 2509 Limestone Road, Wilmington, where friends may call after 5 PM. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to either Faithful Friends, 12 Germay Drive, Wilmington, DE 19804 or Salesianum Alumni Association, 1801 N.
