Sister Benedict de la Passion (Susan Elizabeth Armstrong) entered into eternal life on February 18, 2022, at the age of 81. She was born October 5, 1940 in New Orleans, Louisiana to the late James Patrick Armstrong, Jr. and Susan Forsythe Armstrong Ivey. Sister Benedict entered the Little Sisters of the Poor and professed her religious vows on June 13, 1961. For over 60 years she served the elderly poor in homes throughout the United States as a nurse, Mother Superior and Assistant Provincial. Also for over 30 years she served the Church and the Congregation by helping our missionary Little Sisters come to the U.S. to serve. She has been in the Newark Home since 2012.
She is preceded in death by her stepparents, Daniel H. Ivey and Virginia Tête Pond Ivey; brothers James P. Armstrong, S.J., Daniel H. Ivey, Jr., Walter "Terry" Pond (Carol) and sisters Katharine Armstrong Davis (Michael), Lynne Ivey (Barbara), Kevin Ivey Miranne, Karen Ivey Hatcher, Louise Ivey Dillon, Laurelee Pond Helgason and Helen Pond Owen.
She is survived by her brother John F. Armstrong, S.J., and her sisters Marianna Armstrong Faradj (Mabrouck), and Jane Ivey Kammer, as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Funeral services will be held privately with the Little Sisters of the Poor community. In lieu of flowers contributions may be sent to the Little Sisters of the Poor, 185 Salem Church Road, Newark, DE 19713.
