Obituary

Robert D. Powell , 75, of Wilmington, Delaware, died Saturday, May 8, 2021 after a short illness. Bob was born in Springfield, Mass. in 1945, the son of Robert B. and Florence (McMaster) Powell. He was raised in Wilmington, DE and graduated from Brandywine High School in 1964. He attended the Pennsylvania Institute of Technology for Drafting. Bob was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in Germany as a Military Police Officer with the 287th MP, Berlin Command. His unit guarded the trains that went between East and West Berlin. He started his career as a draftsman (DelTech Engineering) then designer/estimator (Fluorodynamics,Inc.), welding and fabrication shop supervisor (Gayle's Machine) and then Engineering Supervisor for Standard Oil of Ohio, Pfaudler Division. Bob eventually started his own mechanical engineering company (Global Mechanical,Inc) with two partners from which he retired in 2001. His whole life, he had a passion for anything with wheels, and if it had a motor that was even better. He absolutely loved cars. Started his racing hobby with a micro midget and raced at Airport Speedway, then onto Sprint cars with URC, a traveling club. He was crew chief for the B&F #28 sprint car. After racing, he and his friends restored 3 antique dragsters. His own latest restoration project was a 1949 Chevy pickup. He was a very thoughtful man who was dearly loved, not only by his family but many friends and acquaintances as well. He will be truly missed by many. Bob is survived by his wife and best friend, Karen. Children: Mike, Suzy (Brian), Tina (Kevin), Tracey (Justin) and Sandy (d-i-l). Grandchildren: Kate, Erinne, Liz, Jeremy, Michael, Connor, Lillian and Kristin. Sisters : Elaine Hill And Joyce Scarborough. There will be no official service, but visitation hours will be on Wednesday, May 19th from 5 to 7 pm at the Mealey Funeral Home and Crematory, Limestone and Milltown Roads, Wilmington, Delaware 19808. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bob's memory to Seasons Hospice, 220 Continental Drive, Suite 101, Newark, DE 19713 or to the donor's favorite charity.
