Age 83, of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2017. John "Jack" was the son of the late John Edward and Annette (Creedon) Dougherty and was educated at St. Aloysius Academy, Archmere Academy, and the University of Delaware.Jack served proudly in the US Navy aboard the USS Hornet during the Korean War.Jack is survived by his beloved partner, Peg Tigue; his children, Sherrill Dougherty and her husband, Al Lodato, of Lewes, DE; Christopher Dougherty and his wife, Donna, of Williamstown, NJ and Timothy Dougherty and his wife, Shelley, of Middletown, DE; grandchildren: Marc, Caryn, Brendan (Lindsay), Joanna (Jeff), Francesca, Haley and great grandchild, Zoe, and Winona B. Dougherty, wife, Lewes, DE. Also surviving are his sisters, Jane Hance, Ann Armstrong (John) and Susan Bailey (Ben); and his brother, Anthony Dougherty(Kathy). His brother, Gerald Dougherty preceded him in death.Jack took great pride in his family's Irish Heritage and in 1981 founded the Appoquinimink Celtic Association for the enhancement of Celtic awareness. Jack was the North American co-ordinator for the Grand Reunion of the O'Dochartaigh clan, held on the Innishowen Peninsula, County Donnegal, Ireland in 1985. This was the largest clan gathering ever held in Ireland at the time.In 1958, Jack formed "Flash Enterprises, Inc", pioneering the development of highway construction flashing barricades and founded Industrial Products of Delaware, Inc, a fluid connector and motion equipment specialty house, the following year. In 1984 Jack established Benz Hydraulics, Inc specializing in fluid power for industry and heavy construction.An active member of the Tall Ships Delaware committees in 1999, 2000, and 2006, Jack took great pride in his maritime passion.He continued his great adventures by travelling the world with friends and family.Jack was also a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, February 22nd at 10:30 AM at St. Joseph on the Brandywine Church, 10 Old Church Road, Greenville.
