Jimmie (Jim) R. Murphy, born on July 31, 1934, passed away on May 26, 2020 in St. Francis Hospital after a brief illness. Born in West Chester, PA he was the son of the late Erma (Russell) and Orville Murphy. Jim graduated from Overbrook High School in West Philadelphia and was a proud member of the Overbrook basketball team. Jim started his career as a machinist at Lenape Forge in West Chester and went on to establish a successful career in sales at Lenape Forge and other sales related roles including automotive sales. He had a great love of sports and relished the countless nights he played baseball in the West Chester men's league at Hoopes Park. Jim was an avid car racing fan and enjoyed the many hours spent building and racing a stock car with his son, Michael and his best friend Richard Jarrett. A loyal Penn State football fan, he found great pleasure in making road trips to Beaver Stadium. Jim also enjoyed many years spending time on the golf course, highlighted by a 2011 trip to his all-time favorite golf location at Lahinch Golf Club in Ireland. He had an affection for the Jersey shore and created wonderful memories there on the numerous day trips he took with his brother and sisters.
Jim and his wife, Jackie, had 40 wonderful years together - 23 of them married. Jim and Jackie were frequent visitors to Grotto's Pizza on Pennsylvania Avenue in Wilmington where they have made dear friends who are like family. Jim and Jackie's 23rd wedding anniversary was on May 24. In addition to his parents, Jim was predeceased by his brother, Ed Murphy.
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Jackie; his son and daughter-in-law, Jimmie Michael and Susan Murphy; his daughter, Lynn Flynn and her partner, Vince Miele; Jackie's children, Jacqueline Dougherty and Chuck Dougherty (Michelle); grandchildren, Kelly Morgan (Nate), Lisa Thompson (Rich), Jake Flynn, Katie Flynn and Camryn Dougherty; great grandchildren, Olivia, Michael and "bun-in-the-oven" Thompson; and Ava, Briana and Ryan Morgan.
In addition, Jim is survived by his siblings, Dennis Murphy (Ray) and Mary Catherine Williams (Carl), Jerri Wilimzig (Wayne), and Sue Grubb (Bob). Jim also had numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Jim is also survived by one of his closest and long-time friends, Richard Jarrett.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday June 16th, 2020 at 11 A.M. at St. Elizabeth's Roman Catholic Church, Clayton and Cedar Streets. Burial will be private.
