Obituary

Gerald F. Hickey, 91, of Asheville, NC died January 10, 2016. A native of Worcester, MA, he had lived in Wilmington in the 1940s and nearly thirty years in Newark. He was the son of the late John J. and Mabel (Nystrom) Hickey and was preceded in death by his first wife, Ida M. (Bobbie) DiRoberto Hickey in 1977, his second wife, Shirley Bailey Maiwurm Hickey in 2007, his sister Mabel Hickey LaJoie in 2007 and an infant son, Christopher M. Hickey. He was a graduate of South High and obtained his BS in Mechanical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He was a Navy veteran of WWII and was registered as a Professional Engineer in Connecticut, Delaware, and New York. Mr. Hickey retired in 1982 as a Senior Consultant from the Engineering Department of E.I.duPont Company. Mr. Hickey had been active in Boy Scouts, serving at various times and places as Cubmaster, Assistant Scoutmaster, and Troop Committee Chairman. He had been a Eucharist Minister and Lector at St John/Holy Angels Church in Newark. He is survived by his five children and their spouses: Anthony F. Hickey and his wife Barbara Lewis Hickey of Wilmington, DE; Catherine T. Hickey and her husband William D. Fletcher, Jr. of Dover, DE; John J. Hickey and his wife Susan Epstein of West Park, NY; S. Patrick Hickey and his wife Andrea M. Blythe of Maplewood, NJ; and Gregory K. Hickey and his wife Amy L. Hickey of Manassas, VA; his eleven grandchildren: Michelle Hickey Suchyj, Melanie Hickey Pertain, Monica Hickey Herjavec, Mason Hickey, M. Andrew Hickey, Jeffrey G. Fletcher, Timothy C. Fletcher, Christopher M. Hickey, Kelly M. Hickey, Sean M. Hickey and Paul A. Hickey; and ten great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, January 30th at St. John the Baptist Church, East Main and Chapel Streets, Newark at 10:30 AM where friends are invited to visitation after 10 AM.
