Cheryl Shannon Markiewicz, age 67, of Hockessin and Lewes, DE passed away peacefully from breast cancer at home in Hockessin on Thursday, May 24, 2018.Cheryl was the first born to John "Jack" and Betty Everett Shannon. Cheryl graduated from Corpus Christi HS and received her Bachelor and Master degrees from the University of Delaware. She began her career as a Special Education teacher and retired as the Educational Diagnostician at Christiana HS. As she began the next phase of her life, she married her husband Bob, and together, with the arrival of their son, Justin, engaged in a multitude of sports, cultural, educational, volunteering activities, and especially the enjoying the beach.Cheryl's own volunteer activities, all too numerous to mention, included teaching GED classes as well as state-run educational classes for unwed mothers and prison parolees. She was an active member of many boards and committees including the Mendenhall Village Civic Association, the Irish Culture Club and area library associations.While serving as a member of the Friends of Historic Riverview Cemetery, Cheryl became involved with State Sen. Margaret Rose Henry's Cemetery Committee. She was appointed to the State Cemetery Board in 2009. Her proudest moment as a member of the Riverview Cemetery Board was researching the cemetery history and chairing the committee. Her work resulted in the Riverview Cemetery being listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. This also led to procuring a State of Delaware marker for the cemetery in 2013.Her never-ending passion for genealogy began in 1978 and carried with her until her final days. This included membership on many local, state and national historical societies and administering the Shannon surname Y-DNA group at Family Tree.Cheryl always loved her summers at the beach; spending her childhood and later summers at Piney Point in Ocean View, DE were her favorite memories. Her passion for the beach continued as she spent her later years at Lewes. Always having been a sports participant, Cheryl found her niche with the sport of pickle ball, which provided her hours of fun and exercise as well as a plethora of new friends up and down the state.Cheryl is pre-deceased by her parents, her sister, Colleen, and her brother, Michael. She is survived by her devoted and caring husband, Robert F. of Hockessin; her loving son, Justin R. of Silver Spring, MD and three sisters, Betsy, Jackie, and Jeannie.Bob and Justin would like to thank Delaware Hospice, a wonderful organization who provided exceptional care and compassion. Extended gratitude goes to Beth, Michelle, Linda, and Joelle who always left us feeling like it was a great day.A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, May 30th, at 12:00 noon at St. John the Beloved Church, 905 Milltown Rd. A visitation period will be held beforehand from 10:30 am to 12:00 noon. Burial will be in All Saints Cemetery following the service.
