Betty (O'Brien) Dougherty, age 87, of Wilmington, DE passed away peacefully on December 29, 2014 with her family by her side. Betty was born on September 9,1927 and raised by Wholly and Florence Brown of Rising Sun, MD. At age 17, under the ROTC Bill, she attended Wilmington General Hospital School of Nursing where she continued to enjoy many years of nursing and was an active member and officer holder of the Wilmington General Nursing Alumni Association. She also practiced nursing at the Episcopal Church Home and Goldey Beacom College. Betty was an avid Phillies and Eagles fan. She also spent many memorable summers with her family at their beach home on the Indian River Bay. She was a voracious reader. She enjoyed bowling, golfing and swimming as well. As a world class traveler, she visited from Australia to Austria. She was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church.Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, James R. Dougherty. She is survived by three daughters Mary Kay Hall, Patricia M Dougherty (Michael Dombroski), Ann Rodriguez (Angel), and a son, Michael R Dougherty (Amy). She is also survived by six grandchildren Ryan Rios, Kaylyn and Michael Rodriguez, and Joel, Darryl and Elijah Hicks. The family wishes to express gratitude to Season's Hospice, VNA, especially Rose, and Griswold Home Care for the compassionate and tender care given to Betty.Friends and relatives are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 9th and DuPont Streets, Wilmington on Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at 11:00 am, with visitation one hour prior at 10:00 am. Interment will take place at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear, DE.
